Amazon's Lord Of The Rings: Fan-Casting Every (Possible) Major Role

10. Merry Brandybuck - Tom Holland

James McAvoy Gandalf
Marvel Studios

The intelligent but light-hearted Meriadoc needs an actor capable of cracking up viewers and creating empathy in the prequel. Though Tom Holland can more than hold his own as a lead player, his participation as a vulnerable hobbit coming of age would be a welcome contrast to his superhero role.

Merry might be the character with the most to gain in the Amazon production when compared to his diminutive companions. Tolkien gave him an intriguing personal history that the trilogy never touched upon. Many Rings purists are aware that the Brandybucks are a premier family in the Shire. This opens up a slew of chances to evaluate his familial responsibilities and how it affects his bond with his lower-class neighbors. Spider-man: Homecoming illuminated Holland's gift for elevating friendship scenes. His memorable moments with Tony Stark and Ned helped propel the picture to box office records.

Holland is a trustworthy teammate even when he's donning his infamous mask. In his Avengers appearances, he's a remarkable supporting cast member who isn't afraid to let others shine. It's tough to gauge whether or not Merry will be center stage in the prequel but Holland should enliven any screentime that's allotted to him.

The prequel would also be the proper setting to burrow into Merry's scholarly side. Merry later becomes a prodigious writer in Middle-earth. Holland could use his craft to portray another knowledgable youth not unlike Peter Parker.

If Amazon's searching for a resourceful and reliable Merry, Marvel's rising star will make them happy.
