The pilot episode premiered back at SXSW, which is when we got our first taste of the reception to the series and what we could expect. Although reviews were embargoed, early word on Twitter was very positive.

Now the proper reviews have started coming out, and, well, they are GREAT. Empire gave the first two episodes 5*, saying "If Fuller and Green maintain the sky-high quality of these first two episodes, this will be something very special."

IGN gave it 9/10, calling the premiere "...a powerful and visually stunning first episode."

IndieWire gave it a B+, writing: "While we’re still waiting to see if the story’s substance can match its visual splendor, there’s so much meat here, it’s hard to doubt the blood is coming — especially with Fuller wielding the cleaver."

EW gave it an A-, praising "the characters, the concept, [and] the deeply considered filmmaking..." Variety call it "a delight for fans of the book and newcomers alike," while THR offer one of the less effusive reviews, commenting on the series' "unevenness" and "haphazard" tone.
