As brutality becomes more common on television, shows will always look for ways to push the boundaries. However, using rape to propel the narrative forward often comes under fire, most notably with Sansa Stark.

While Game Of Thrones was criticised for panning away to Theon, American Horror Story was criticised for the exact opposite. However, it was made far more horrible by social media’s reaction. There were good faith debates on both sides, but some sick viewers cheered the scene on, fuelled by their hatred of the actress, Emma Roberts, lamenting that they weren’t part of the gang.

While there’s a dark artistry to the rape in Hotel, this scene from Coven lacks that subtlety.

It’s not even the only sexual abuse storyline that season, with Evan Peters’ Kyle molested by his mother. Is this evidence of a deeper theme of abuse, or just piling shock upon shock for a gimmick? Viewers fall on either side, and it’s easy to see why.

If we sanitise our televisions of anything upsetting, the reality of storytelling falls apart. But after this scene, it’s easy to see why some argue the most heinous acts of humanity should not be used for entertainment.
