American Horror Story: 10 Reasons Asylum Is The Best Season
6. Lana Winters
Laurie Strode, Nancy Thompson, Ellen Ripley, and Sidney Prescott - horror is littered with final girls and Lana Winters rightly joins the ranks.
Sarah Paulson's role had been small in the first season, but Asylum was her time to shine, arguably becoming second fiddle to Lange's appearance in the first four seasons. From her original appearance as an unlikable Rita Skeeter of journalism, Paulson's performance soon won us round to be the hero of Asylum. The hardship undergone by Lana could have seemed farfetched, but Murphy cleverly crafted one of TV's best survivors. Lana was a strong woman with stronger morals and to make it even better, she represented the LGBT community.
Murphy's shows (AHS in particular) aren't afraid to push the boundaries, and while it would have been just as easy to have Lana as a male protagonist, it fit the period to have her a ballsy female investigative journalist. Lana also holds an award for being one of the few characters to cross into multiple seasons of the show and make it back alive. While Lana's appearance in the Season 6 finale was only a shadow of her Briarcliff days, elevated to national treasure status, there was something reassuring in seeing her on our screens.
