American Horror Story: 10 Reasons Asylum Is The Best Season

5. The Nuns

American Horror Story Asylum
FX

If you thought that Murder Hose had some powerhouse female protagonists, just wait until Briarcliff opened its doors. Lana Winters had stiff competition from Sister Mary Eunice, and of course, Sister Jude.

This wasn't anything like the Sister Act world of nuns, and the Briarcliff women battled doing the work of God and stopping the work of the Devil. Lily Rabe's performance as the doomed Sister Mary Eunice turned a huge corner when she found herself possessed by the Devil only a few episodes in. Kudos to Rabe, she pretty much created two wholly different characters while still wearing the one habit.

Then we had Jessica Lange as Jude, pretty much the perfect "love to hate" addition to the series. Just like Lana, sometimes you found yourself loving Jude, sometimes hating her. Lange played her as a wonderfully complex character that trod the line between villain and victim, while her incarceration towards the end of the season was a bitter taste of her own medicine. I'm not sure what good Asylum did for the Catholic Church, but the nuns brought a whole new meaning to the term bible bashers.
