American Horror Story: 10 Things Freak Show Must Do Better Than Its Predecessors

2. Keep Character Development Consistent

While some characters such as Madam LaLaurie received some quite intense character development, others were almost entirely overlooked. For example, Fiona Goode never really got more than a couple of flashbacks which while set up her actions, didn't explain why she did what she did. In the hands of anyone but Jessica Lange, it would have been a dreadful character but giving it to such a fine actress saved it. These important character evolutions are opportunities for writing. Rather than trying to create something new, if the writers can seize the chance to explain a character's motivation, then the audience will thank them for it, especially if that motivation also moves the overall story forward as well. Admittedly this is something that American Horror Story is getting better at - back in the days of Murder House this didn't appear to happen at all. American Horror Story needs to get even better at this. While they have a good cast, they need to give them the type of complex characters that they can handle rather than use them to cover the cracks in the writing. To be honest, this is a Ryan Murphy trait €“ just look at Quinn or Tina on Glee, who both end up changing major character traits for no reason at a quicker speed than WWE drops a terrible gimmick.
