American Horror Story: Apocalypse - 3 Ups & 1 Down From ‘Sojourn’

3. The Return Of Wilhemina Venable

Alongside Cody Fern, Sarah Paulson has carried Apocalypse. First she portrayed the cold and calculated Wilhemina Venable, before transitioning into her beloved Coven character Cordelia Foxx, and subsequently made a brief appearance as Billie Dean Howard.

It's been great having both Billie Dean and Cordelia back on our screens after all this time, but their re-appearance was somewhat overshadowed by Venable's unnecessary death, which occured earlier in the season. The character was full of potential, and could've been explored in greater detail, but was killed off for no reason other than to ensure that two of Paulson's characters wouldn't be on-screen at the same time.

Nonetheless, Venable makes a surprise appearance Sojourn, during one of the show's trademark flashback sequences. Sporting a much more colourful look than the one we're accustomed to seeing her with, Venable's signature black garments and the severe bun-type hairstyle are nowhere to be seen. In their place is a purple suit, and long wavy ginger hair. What's still intact, however, is the character's vicious tongue.

While we know Venable to be dead in the present day narrative, it's neat that she made one more appearance before the end of the season considering she's one of Paulson's finest characters on AHS to date.
