American Horror Story: Every Season Ranked Worst To Best (So Far)
6. Season Nine: 1984
The most recent season of the horror anthology was a big narrative improvement on Apocalypse. Whilst its predecessor was focused on tying together previous seasons and giving fans a slew of returning characters, 1984 takes it all back the simple, tightly written early days of the show.
Heavily influenced by the 80s horror slasher scene, 1984 features ghosts, serial killers and some daring time jumps. Following a group of friends who decide to spend a summer working at Camp Redwood - the site of a particularly grisly massacre years earlier - 1984 sees its main characters come face to face with the infamous Richard Ramirez and tackle a genuinely effective mystery.
To top it off, the season ends on a note decidedly happier but just as satisfying as previous entries.
1984 falls down, though, with its cast. Whilst Emma Roberts, Billie Lourd and Cody Fern are on terrific form, and Matthew Morrison proves to be a welcome addition to the show.
This is the first season not to feature mainstays Evan Peters and Sarah Paulson, and their presence is missed in the proceedings. Also, with nine episodes, it's the shortest season to date, and there are moments when things feel a bit rushed.
1984 is a compelling season of TV, but would have been even better had the cast included Peters and Paulson, and had there been a few more episodes to enjoy.
