James Cromwell may have only made one appearance in American Horror Story (so far?), but he made sure audiences would remember him when he turned up as former Nazi scientist Arthur Arden, who worked at Briarcliff Manor and spent his days butting heads with Sister Jude and performing inhumane experiments on the Manor's patients.

Between his chilling background, unsettling relationship with Sister Eunice and Cromwell's imposing figure and booming voice, Arden was easily one of Asylum's many highlights - even if he did inspire countless nightmares with his sadistic experimentation and unpredictable behaviour.
