American Horror Story: Kathy Bates' Characters Ranked Worst To Best
1. Iris - Hotel
Delphine gets the award for technically best performance, but best character has to go to the manager of the Hotel Cortez: Iris. There's just something about the bespectacled, bumbling Mid-West woman that is just so endearing.
At first glance, she is simply doing her best to make amends with her estranged, vampiric son Donovan. Taking up an administrative job at the hotel allows her a modicum of access to her completely alienated kid, while her over-sized glasses and matronly demeanor make her the least threatening person to look at in the hotel.
It soon becomes apparent, though, that she's far more willing to get her hands dirty than appearances would suggest. She's kidnapped, drained, and murdered "food sources" for the countess and her son, she killed Hypodermic Sally herself, and her eventual infection with the vampire virus removes any last impediment of her violent streak to transform her into quite the killer. That slow-mo shot of her and best pal Liz Taylor shooting up the hotel in an act of revenge against the Countess is still goosebump inducing.
But, despite her murderous tendencies and slightly over-possessive nature, Iris remains largely motivated by love for her son and her friends. Not that this behaviour is healthy or to be condoned, but it makes for a delightful character who you can't help but to root for.
