Angel: Every Main Character Ranked Worst To Best

9. Charles Gunn

Angel Spike
20th Television

This might seem a low ranking for one of Angel's longest serving protagonists, but there are pretty clear reasons for his position here if you think back over his time on the show.

Introduced at the back-end of season one, Gunn (J. August Richards) was revealed as a freelance vampire hunter who worked the streets of Los Angeles with his crew and committed himself tirelessly to ridding the world of such evil. After meeting Angel, he was forced to stake his recently-turned sister and eventually found himself allied with Angel and his team.

Providing some more muscle to Angel Investigations and some much needed street smarts, he held up as a fairly compelling character during the early stages of the show's run. Loyal, strong and calm, he formed a very unlikely bond with Wesley Wyndam-Pryce (Alexis Denisof) and briefly dated Fred Burkle (Amy Acker), but by Season 4 his character had begun to wear thin.

Not because he was in any way a poor character or because Richards had lost his touch, but because the writers clearly found themselves struggling to fit him into the narrative, and he often felt out-of-place and lost amongst much larger personalities. He became a super-cool lawyer in the final season, which was decent and refreshing, but even then he ended up cast aside and left out of the big moments.

Aidan Whatman hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
