While the vast majority of jokes in Arrested Development are tied to the characters and situations within the show's world, some of the best touched on real-world events. One such joke revolved around George Bluth Sr., or more accurately, it revolved around Jeffrey Tambor's loss of an award.

In one scene, George says to his son, "Wait, wait. Somebody threatened you?" This is followed by Michael, who says, "It's a wonderful performance Dad, you're a regular Brad Garrett." This is one of those lines that most people wouldn't give a second thought, and it's thrown out quickly and just as quickly forgotten.

One year before this interaction took place on Arrested Development, but in the real world, Jeffrey Tambor was up for an Emmy Award for his work on the series. When the Emmy was announced, it went to Brad Garrett for his work on Everybody Loves Raymond.

This makes Michael's line less of a ding against his father and more of a swipe at the actor who played him. When he hears his son mention Garrett, the look on George's face was one of genuine pain and loss over his award, making the joke a little breaking of the Fourth Wall.
