10. The Undertaking
Arrow has made a lot of ballsy moves over the four seasons that have aired so far, but perhaps the ballsiest is the way that Season 1 ended. Instead of the hero emerging victorious to get the girl and reap his rewards, Oliver pretty much failed at saving his city when the Undertaking destroyed half of the Glades. The bad guy may have been killed or so it seemed at the time, anyway and some lives may have been saved, but the surprise second earthquake device still managed to level a decent chunk of Starling and kill more than five hundred people. Oliver was injured. Diggle was injured. Moira was imprisoned. A whole bunch of apparently essential files at CNRI got some rubble dust on them. Oh, and Tommy died, and it was horrible and heartbreaking and hasnt gotten any easier in the years since. The Undertaking succeeding was a huge downer of an ending for Season 1, but it was also incredibly effective at setting up the next leg of Olivers heros journey and proved that Arrow isnt afraid to be bold.
