Ever since Arrow started introducing magic, its been a slippery slope. The Lazarus Pit, even if its been sealed, was akin to a get-out-of-jail-free-card and the premise of magic in general has acted like a deus ex machina, allowing them to get out of plot jams by simply using some magic spell or object to save them. The problem has now expanded to the guest characters as well. John Constantine and Vixen were both welcome additions, but they were essentially only there to act as magical plot devices to help save Sara and find Darhk respectively. While the inclusion of magic hasnt been the singular cause for the shows failings, its a crutch that has made the narrative less believable and has also drawn the show away from the realism that made it a hit in the first place. By removing Darhks totem and fighting him as a human for the rest of the season, the show could easily help audiences forget about its lacklustre magical themes.
