Arrow Season 5 Finale: 8 Big Questions We Need Answers To
6. Is Olicity Coming Back?
One of the most divisive elements of Arrow may just be coming back. It was enjoyed during the show's first three seasons, but has gradually become abhorred by many viewers, leaving Arrow's showrunners to break the couple up and largely remove much of the romantic subplots in season 5. However, with the last couple episodes, the show has teased the relationship's imminent reappearance.
Considering the good fortune that season 5 has built up with long-time viewers that feared the show had lost its touch, this choice seems unnecessary. Any decision that risks shifting focus away from the action/character moments in favor of the characters' romances could scare away viewers, and the show's writers don't always have a great track record of balancing romance and action in an engaging way.
Even if the last couple of episodes sets up the couple uniting well, Olicity simply works best as a back-and-forth "will they/won't they" relationship. Season 4 showed that Olicity just doesn't work as a long-term thing, and it's difficult to say that the showrunners have learned all the right lessons from the previous season to make it work this time.
