Arrow Season 7: 4 Ups & 2 Downs From ‘Star City 2040’

1. All About Felicity

While 'Star City 2040' was undoubtedly one of the better offerings of the season, it merely highlighted the biggest issue with the flash-forward narrative: it was literally all about Felicity.

The reunion of William and Mia? All about Felicity. The returns of Dinah and Roy? Also about Felicity. The mission to stop the destruction of The Glades? All orchestrated by Felicity, who had yet to even make an appearance before this week.

Now, Felicity Smoak is definitely one of Arrow's most memorable characters. With her quirky one-liners and endearing personality, she has proven herself over the years and, without a doubt, deserves her place on the show. Unfortunately, she is also somewhat responsible for the show's now-infamous decline in standard between Seasons 3 and 4 when she literally became the center of everything that it tackled.

While the current creative team seems to have a much better grasp of what the show is about under the tutelage of Beth Schwartz, it still doesn't change the fact that Felicity functions much better as a supporting character. If she is given too much involvement in the plot, she risks enveloping the show altogether, and we all know how that turned out the last time.

With Arrow's end in sight, the writers should be focusing on other more important characters or, at the very least, sharing the screen-time out evenly. Making Felicity dominate both the present and future is not the way to go out on a high.
