Arrow Season 7: 7 Theories For Who The New Green Arrow Is

Old Roy Harper wasn't the biggest surprise of the premiere - that honour instead goes to the older version of William, Oliver's son, who meets him on Lian Yu.

The flashforward is a huge (Queen's) gambit from the show, as it goes down the same kind of storytelling route as Westworld has recently. This storyline takes place around 20-years in the future, and we can gather that William hasn't seen his father for a long time. He obviously has a real purpose for going to Lian Yu though, and for seeking out Roy Harper, and that could be to train in the same way his dad once did.

If that is the case, then it's possible that version of William then comes back to save Star City while his father is imprisoned. Time-travel exists in this universe, albeit more on The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow, and while Arrow's attempts at moving away from more grounded stories haven't always been successful, this would explain exactly why they're showing us William in the future.
