Commander Erwin Smith certainly hasn't had it easy when he's come into contact with the titans. When he tried to rescue Eren from the Armoured Titan and Bertolt in season two, he ended having his arm eaten. Things didn't let up for the Commander, as he had the unenviable task of leading the Survey Corps to their doom against the Beast Titan.

With a squadron of petrified fighters at his disposal, it was going to take a lot for Smith to convince them that his kamikaze mission was the only hope they had of actually defeating the titan. Instead of lying to his soldiers, Smith is brutally honest in that he believes that very few of them will survive the encounter, but it'll be worth dying a hero's death than going out like cowards.

Despite their fears, Smith's rousing speech helps them decide that by sacrificing their lives, they're saving the lives of everyone in the walls. As the remaining survey corps ride towards their inevitable death, it becomes a very emotional moment as it shows just how much they trust and believe in Smith as their leader.
