Eren was a young child with a seemly stable life, right up until the breach of the wall and the first Titan invasion in 100 years. Hapless onlookers were scooped up by the human-looking giants and scoffed up like mid-morning snacks. But no occupant experienced the horror in the same depth as poor Eren, who could only stare defenseless as a particularly nasty looking Titan scooped up his mother from the wreckage of their house, twisted her in half and proceeded to chomp.
Nearly sixty eps in, and this is still one of the most disturbing moments in the show's history, and laid the narrative foundations for virtually everything that followed. It also clarified Titans to be a new and formidable kind of nightmarish creature: Soulless human-looking giants with zero concept of mercy and a beastly desire to do nothing other than wonder around, searching for the next human to eat.
