Batman: The Animated Series: 10 Worst Episodes

3. I've Got Batman In My Basement - 1992

Despite being the first appearance of the Penguin in B:TAS, (modeled very closely on his look from Batman Returns), this episode suffers because it breaks from the pattern set of darker, brooding adventures in favour of something that could have come from '60s era Hanna-Barbera.

This episode involves Batman intercepting the transfer of a priceless Faberge egg from a couple petty thieves to the Penguin. During the course of the exchange, two junior 'detectives' who find themselves at the scene put themselves in mortal danger, forcing Batman to divert his attention from the Penguin and allowing himself to get gassed.

The rest of the episode shows the efforts of Sherman and Roberta (our junior crimefighters) to protect Batman. This episode is far too cutesy for its own good - the kids call Batman their 'client', they booby-trap the house Home Alone-style to stop the Penguin and his gang, they hit buttons in the Batmobile until it miraculously starts and they are able to escape with it.

There was even a bit at the end when Sherman's mom came home to find her house wrecked, only to forgive the kids when she saw Batman. It may have well ended with a Scooby-Doo style 'everyone laughs' fadeout.

Bruce Timm, a legend of the DC Animated Universe, has gone on the record saying that the script was 'terrible' and that the artists 'didn't care'. (http://www.toonzone.net/anbat/btas/igbimb.html)

It shows.
