One side of Goodman's character that we didn't get to see was his notorious ability in the courtroom. Though it was obvious that his credentials weren't exactly gained at the highest academic institutes, his knowledge of the law, and particularly its bad-doors and loop-holes established that Saul was not simply a chancer with an important looking office: he clearly has the skills to back up his bravado. And brilliantly, the spin-off looks set to trade more on those skills, putting Goodman in front of judges, and allowing us to watch him weasel his way out of cases and spar against other lawyers in his natural environment. Writer/ producer Peter Gould recently hinted that Saul will spend some time inside a courtroom when he said he'd been "hanging around in courtrooms" for "a little bit of research." That will certainly add a new dimension to the character, and draw a definite distinction between the spin-off and Breaking Bad, and it's a wonderful prospect to see Goodman trading blows with an adversary in court, particularly as Gilligan sees Goodman as the type of character who "will do anything it takes to stay out of a court of law. He'll settle on the courthouse steps, whatever it takes to stay out of the courtroom."
