Better Call Saul: Ranking Every Main Character From Worst To Best

1. Mike Ehrmantraut

Lalo Salamanca Better Call Saul
AMC

Whereas Saul was given the added context of how he was a very different man before Breaking Bad, Mike is built upon instead, allowing him to become the awesome action hero/ grounded moral compass he was always given snippets of in the original show.

Mike's role here is so expanded that he takes on the responsibility of being the audience's 'in' to the world of crime for what feels like seasons while Jimmy is off dealing with his lawyering and personal drama. Mike is building relationships with Nacho and Gus, warring with the Salamancas, and just being incredible to watch as he does it.

His undying love for Stacey and Kaylee is engaging and sympathetic, as is his humorous apathy towards his friendship with Jimmy. Mike is always fascinating and is at the centre of the most high octane narratives on the show.

The Season One episode Five-O, in which Mike tells the story of how he feels responsible for his son's death and how he murdered those responsible, is destroying, harrowing and the best piece of acting on the whole show. For the final season, Gilligan and Gould would be wise to give Jonathan Banks a similar kind of showcase again.

Mike is better here than in his already great tenure on Breaking Bad, and he stands as the best character in Better Call Saul. The show managed to take an already iconic character and improve on him ten fold.
