Better Call Saul: Ranking Every Main Character From Worst To Best
9. Howard Hamlin
Howard was an enjoyable foil and faux figurehead for Jimmy's misgivings in the earlier seasons of Better Call Saul, but lately the writers have really struggled with what to do with him more than any other principal character. An arrogant and vain partner at HHM, Howard was at one point the boss of Jimmy and Kim and a close friend of Chuck McGill.
At first, Howard appeared the main force for stonewalling Jimmy's attempts as rising through the ranks of HHM. As soon as it is revealed that it is really Chuck who was the mastermind of that plot, Howard has slowly slipped in importance with each subsequent season.
Turning into more of a lacky for Chuck than a friend, after Chuck's suicide Howard has a brief revitalisation as he and HHM begin to spiral and struggle. It was entertaining seeing a previously conceited Howard broken down and troubled.
However, that turn didn't last, as Howard and HHM are back on the rise in Season Five. Whether Jimmy and Kim are serious about going through with framing Howard for "something unforgivable" in the show's final season remains to be seen. With so many other moving parts in need of wrapping up, it would be surprising if much time can be dedicated to the character, but it would be good for Howard to get some fitting closure.
