Better Call Saul Season 3 Premiere: 7 Ups & 1 Down From 'Mabel'

2. Moving Closer To Saul

A big reason to start worrying about Kim now, if you weren't already, is that while she's the one stopping Jimmy from becoming full-Saul, that obviously can't last forever. The show has shown considerable restraint in its lead character's transformation, but we're edging ever closer to Mr Goodman. We'll hear that name for the first time this year, and we get some serious signs of it here.

In one of the episode's standout scenes, the Air Force captain from Season 2's Fifi - the one Jimmy conned with the fake war hero story about Fudge Talbot - returns to confront him over his lies and deceit.

Jimmy manages to worm his way out of it here, turning things around on the captain, and it's impossible not to get a sense of Saul Goodman here. He's just so slippery, so clever, and yet there's a stark warning for him: "The wheel is gonna turn. It always does."

We see how hard this encounter hits him, proving he's not fully Saul just yet: when he's yelling at the captain, it becomes quite clear he's really speaking to Chuck, and the pain once more flashes across Jimmy's face. But this is definitely the closest we've edged yet, and while it's brilliant spending time with Jimmy, that's also an exciting proposition.
