Better Call Saul Season 3 Premiere: 7 Ups & 1 Down From 'Mabel'
3. Kim Wexler Is The Show's Not-So-Secret Weapon
While we know the fates of Jimmy and Mike after Better Call Saul, as they go on to become Saul Goodman and Gus Fring's fixer respectively, the newer characters are unknowns. And while Chuck, as the villain-of-the-piece, is someone we can say goodbye to, things are far more troubling when it comes to Kim Wexler.
There's a definite sense of impending doom about the character, since she doesn't appear in Breaking Bad, and that helps makes her more interesting, but also means you definitely worry when watching her. Because Kim is one of the most fascinating aspects of Better Call Saul, even in episodes like this where she's arguably underserved by the plot.
As highlighted by the camera work and lighting, she is the light to Jimmy's darkness; the hand on the shoulder that stops him from slipping (or slippin'). Rhea Seehorn is, like so many of the cast, doing brilliant work, making Kim a truly likeable and sympathetic character, while having her own drives and conflicts when it comes to Jimmy and her career. When she obsesses over one small piece of punctuation in a legal document, well, it of course only makes her a better person, but also serves as a ticking clock for this character and her relationship with Jimmy.
