Black Mirror: 6 Best & 6 Worst Inventions
3. WORST - Soul Copying
The episode U.S.S. Callister is basically the garage bargain basement DVD rip-off of Star Trek when it starts off, but it soon shows its focus on a truly terrifying use of technology. Taking place within a video game system much like the ones from the episode Playtest, the NPCs of the game have actually been copied into the game using the same sort of technology as is found in San Junipero.
The Captain Kirk-style character who commands the starship is, in reality, a creeper who kidnaps people from his office and keeps them in the game to be his personal playthings. Those who play along get to live, while those who don't are basically red-shirts.
And he gets away with it, because he's not actually kidnapped the people themselves. He's taken their DNA and uploaded copies of them to the games, so the actual people go about their lives without knowing that they've been copied and are held prisoner. While this sounds like a plot from Law & Order: Future Crimes Unit, there are far too many monsters in this world for tech like this to become available.
