Two great wars in Greek myth are the basis of this particular story - briefly touching on the well-known Titanomachy, in which the gods defeat the titans, and then focusing more on the slightly lesser known Gigantomachy, where gods and giants vied for supremacy.

With different sources saying different things about certain mythological events, bringing in their own interpretation and their own new story incorporating different aspects of mythology was a great idea on the creators's end - and even with an R rating, it probably would've been hard to sell the Giants coming from the testicle-blood of the castrated primeval Uranus to network.

In particular, the way the team decided to merge certain aspects of the Titan and Giants stories while not getting them mixed up the way many sources over the years seem to have, made for a great introduction to the world the protagonists of the series find themselves in.

Another creative liberty the team took with the Giants is their designs - a far cry from the simple hoplite footsoldier depictions or the snake-legged depictions of ancient Greek giants. Makes for a much more enjoyable visual feast, to have such monstrous varieties in their designs.
