Blood Of Zeus Review: 9 Ups And 2 Downs
2. Up: The Character Designs
There's so much to say about the distinctive designs in the characters of this series, especially given the way they adapt existing figures of myth with subtle visual language and not-so-subtle grandeur in their dress and armour.
Hera in particular presents some interesting imagery, from her armour's helm that references cows as one of her sacred animals, to one of her appearances including the golden fleece of myth (probably for dramatic effect, if nothing else).
Even with few of the gods of Olympus actually having speaking lines, their designs are so distinct that it's easy to figure out who's who in a crowd. Some examples include Artemis, with her moon-themed garb and arrow pin; Dionysus, blushing drunk with grapes in his hair; fearsome Ares, always in full armour, a readily terrifying spectre on the battlefield; and the rarely seen but effectively frightening Hades.
One of the most visually intriguing characters, however, isn't of the gods: series antagonist Seraphim, gorgeous and terrifying in equal measure, his monstrous appearance revealing much about his character even before it's fully revealed.
The fact that everyone important in this show is also legendarily beautiful, even the monstrous enemy, is just a bonus.
