BoJack Horseman Season 4: 12 Biggest WTF Moments
9. BoJack's Grandmother Has A Lobotomy
When BoJack arrives at the Sugarman family summer house in Michigan, he's immediately depressed. And rightfully so, as it was here that his grandmother tried to cope with the loss of her son, Crackerjack, during the war. It was also there that she asked her husband to "fix" her, which then resulted in a lobotomy. After it, Honey Sugarman was numb, almost lifeless.
The retrospection is used to explain the reason behind the coldness of BoJack's mother. Since a young age she was emotionally tormented, first by the loss of her brother, then by the grief of her mother, and lastly, by the father, who taught her that emotions are feminine, and femininity is weak.
The lesson for young Beatrice Sugarman was that she should never allow her emotions to get the best of her. Her mother was depressed because of love and urged her together to never love someone as strong as she did her son. Beatrice took that lesson to heart and constantly put down young BoJack, although it's still unanswered if she did it for her own amusement or to harden him.
