BoJack Horseman Season 4 Review: 5 Ups & 1 Down

4. Versatile Humor

One of the show's staples is its humor. It's a comedy, so it's supposed to be funny, but it's funny in so many ways that it's almost mind-boggling how such various types of jokes come together and simply fit next to one another. For example, there's wordplay, like when Jessica Biel releases her set of perfumes called Bielist, which clearly alludes to her being a B-list celebrity. And the best thing about this joke is that even Biel finds it funny, since she voices herself on the show. BoJack Horseman makes fun of celebrities and Hollywood life in general. Simultaneously, it also incorporates Philip Roth, the Beat Generation, or even the Kennedy assassination into the jokes as well, always in a subtle, respectful manner.

The show also makes great use of anthropomorphic characters and their animal aspects, using them for both "main" and throwaway jokes, occurring in the background. A character hiding from the rain under the ear of an elephant standing next to her or saying that her skin is so dry she feels like a lizard while a lizard is standing next to her as well are just some examples of this type of jokes. The show also uses alliteration, rhymes, allusions and played out tropes. All in creative and really funny ways.
