Brand New Star Trek TV Show To Debut In 2017

To take place in the rebooted universe?

Star Trek's had a mainstream resurgence thanks to the J.J. Abrams helmed reboot, but the more Trekkie-friendly TV counterpart has been somewhat forgotten in the explosions and time travel. It's been nearly a decade since Enterprise went off the air, with nary a sign of a new series to take its place. Those dark days are now over, however, with CBS Television Studios announcing today that a brand new Star Trek show will be launched in 2017. The show will follow the adventures of a brand new group of characters, as they explore, according to the press release, "new worlds and new civilisations." Great news, especially as Star Trek will be celebrating its fiftieth anniversary in September 2016 and hype for all things Starfleet will go into warp speed. Some fans may not be thrilled with the involvement of Alex Kurtzman behind the scenes however, as his screenplay work alongside co-writer Roberto Orci on both of the J.J. Abrams Star Trek movies was heavily criticised. There are no solid details about what this new show will entail, but with Kurtzman's involvement it's a safe guess that it will take place in the J.J. Abrams rebooted timeline (a.k.a the lens flare universe), with new characters having suspiciously similar adventures to the ones seen in the original show. This also allows for tie-ins with the movie universe too. The new series will debut in January 2017, and the next movie Star Trek: Beyond, directed by Justin Lin, arrives Summer 2016.

Handsome. Charismatic. Intelligent. Noble. Witty. I'm none of these things, but I'm a half decent writer, I guess.
