5. Jesse And Mike's Drive - Ana Tijoux, '1977'

Gus realises that he needs reeling in; he's not just a liability to the team, but to himself. Jesse and Mike driving across America is soundtracked with Ana Tijoux's '1997'; where most of Breaking Bad's musical genius is in splicing the badass, gritty moments with buoyant, nostalgic pop, this scene does the opposite. It's amusing, watching Jesse find a plethora of ways to annoy Mike, from throwing a cigarette box up and catching it, to turning on the radio only for him to switch it back off again. '1977' is unrelenting rap that tints the drive with a darkness; the pizzicato flourishes sparkle though, and the soaring strings give the episode an operatic hugeness. "My adolescence was a strange stage," the Spanish lyrics say, again, quite fittingly for Jesse Pinkman. But again, it doesn't matter what the lyrics say; the song's chosen for its feeling, and it captures the mood of the scene wonderfully.
