2. Walt Kills Mike (Season Five, Episode Seven)
If you hadn't already sided against Walter White by the mid-point of season five, then theres a good chance that you yourself might be demonstrating slight sociopathic tendencies. Perhaps Walts methods are one of the most extreme examples of the end justifying the means. The jumping off point for a lot of Walt supporters was when he purposely poisoned a child to manipulate Jesse into helping him kill Gus, and thats understandable. There are a lot of traits that one can point to when addressing Walter Whites fatal flaw. His ambition? His greed? His arrogance? Right up there with all of them is his inability to maintain control. Not with regard to his operations and dealings, but to his own actions. Walt isn't one handle things not going his way very well. Even as Mike points out, if he had just shut up and known his place everything would have been fine. Icarus gets alluded to a lot throughout the series with regard to certain characters flying too close to the sun, and Walter has clearly demonstrated time and time again that he is no different. When Mike refuses to give up his own guys to be killed, Walter doesn't handle it well at all. As Mike is about to drive off and start his Walter White free life, he notices that his bag is missing the gun and instantly knows whats about to happen. Thats when Walter walks up to the window and fires at near point blank range, fatally wounding Mike. Ever since his introduction late in season two Mike was a fan favorite, and his demise was a heavy hit for fans to endure. It also demonstrates that no matter how beloved they are by the fans, no one is safe. Well, except for Saul it looks like.
