Brooklyn Nine-Nine: 10 Things You Completely Missed From Season One

3. Hitchcock And Scully Used To Be A Trio

If you're going to make a comedy set in a police precinct, you need to have a few bumbling oafs for comic relief. And nobody encapsulates oafishness better than the dummy detective duo, Norm Hitchcock and Mike Scully. When Hitchcock isn't busy falling for Nigerian scams or moisturising his foot fungi, he's busy wolfing down any food he can find, despite suffering three heart attacks.

Somehow, his partner, Scully, is even more of a disaster. He has no qualms watching porn at work, embracing all sorts of hedonistic behaviour, and cheering when his wife died.

Even though the chemistry between the characters is solid, it could've been different. When Holt became the captain of the Brooklyn 99 in the pilot, he asked Terry to give him the lowdown on the team. Terry mentions how Scully, Hitchcock, and a middle-aged woman called Daniels are "pretty much worthless, but they make good coffee".

For whatever reason, Daniels was written out of the series, turning the dysfunctional trio into a duo. Considering the actors portraying Hitchcock and Scully, Dirk Blocker and Joel McKinnon Miller, are perfect at bouncing dialogue off each other, it was probably for the best.
