Brooklyn Nine-Nine: 10 Things You Completely Missed From Season One
2. Holt's Rainbow Shelf
Due to his staunch manner and strict professionalism, Raymond Holt has become an excellent police detective, as well as an exceptional captain. Nevertheless, he finds himself being met with ridicule from his peers due to his apathetic approach. When he says things like, "That's the funniest thing I have ever heard" in perfect monotone, you can see why Peralta suspected his captain was a robot for a while.
Sadly, Holt has been conditioned to withhold his emotions throughout his entire career. Since homosexuality was stigmatised when he joined the force, Holt was not allowed to be openly gay. This has left such an impact on Holt, he often shows affection to his husband with a firm handshake instead of a kiss or a hug.
But that's not always the case. While Peralta has a meeting with Holt in his office in the third episode, you can see his files are organised to match the colours of the LGTBQ flag. Although Holt has difficulty expressing his emotions, this moment proves he's proud of being gay and finds creative ways to convey this fact.
