15. The Gentlemen Are Coming By
The Gentlemen are easily the scariest creatures to come out of Buffy and one of the scariest TV monsters ever. A bit like Doctor Who's Weeping Angels, they also happen to appear in one of the show's greatest episodes, Hush (AKA the silent one).
The whole thing is stupendous but the scene where the Gentlemen go on the prowl is a genius piece of silent moviemaking. Set to an eerie Danny Elfman-like score, the grinning ghouls float through the streets of Sunnydale and eventually come to a poor college student's dorm, cutting out his heart as he lays there, unable to scream.
Buffy didn't often do true horror but, when it did, it nailed it.
