Spike was the glue that held Buffy the Vampire Slayer together - a chain-smoking, all-English ruffian with bleached hair and a black trench-coat, who could unfortunately never catch a break. Initially intended as a single season Big Bad, Spike was only ever intended to return as a one-off character in season three, but he gelled so well with the cast and fans that he was kept on for years to come.
As per Joss Whedon's penchant for beating up his bad boys, Spike spent his time on Buffy the Vampire Slayer being put through the ringer, from the moment he arrived, and got his arse kicked up and down the halls of Sunnydale High by Buffy, in season two's School Hard; to his beautiful, hand-burning farewell in season seven's finale, Chosen.
But the best characters never truly leave us, and the creators were so taken by Spike that they dragged him back from the aether and onto Angel as a full-time cast member, compounding his days of showing up unannounced to be the everlasting thorn in Angel's side.
