Community: 10 Best Concept Episodes

1. Remedial Chaos Theory

Community Pierce Advanced Dungeons and Dragons
NBC

Remedial Chaos Theory is such an amazing concept episode that, thanks to its multiverse timelines, it actually sets up multiple concept episodes down the line. It all starts with Jeff rolling a dice, but what unfolds is one of the most ambitious episodes in television.

The dice roll gives seven outcomes, one for every side and a seventh where Abed catches the dice in an attempt to stop the timelines forming. The only difference in each scenario is that a different character goes to the door to get the pizza, but that sets off a massive chain of events every time.

To list them all here would be far too limiting, but what’s great about Remedial Chaos Theory is how well it builds on previously established elements in various timelines. For example, in one offshoot we see that Annie carries a gun in her purse, but it’s not until a different timeline where it’s actually fired.

It’s interesting that this episode doesn’t just throw new dynamics together, it also layers the dynamics against different scenarios, while leaving the simplest outcome as canon.

An absolutely genius episode.
