Community: 10 Best Concept Episodes
4. Advanced Dungeons & Dragons
Advanced Dungeons & Dragons is a bit of a weird one, as you could easily make the argument the writers don’t fully commit to the core idea. After all, given Community’s often over-the-top nature, why should we not see this episode have the study group dressing up as their characters for LARPing or in a fantasy sequence? Or, failing that, an animated episode in the style of Harmon Quest?
However, this time around, less was definitely more as it allowed us the explore the characterisation of the group as a whole, rather than just a goofy Dungeons & Dragons tale.
Initially, NBC didn’t want a D&D episode, feeling it was too niche. Ironically, when Harmon didn’t want to repeat the same idea in Season 5, they insisted, citing how much everyone loved the last one.
Back in Season 2 though, it was a masterpiece. Everyone got into the game in their own way, Neil’s backstory was developed and Pierce was a realistic and motivated villain. Though it didn’t dive as deeply into Dungeons & Dragons as it might have, it didn’t need to either.
