8. Documentary Filmmaking: Redux (Season 3, Episode 8)
When Greendale decides their TV commercials are too out of date, they give the Dean $2,000 and ask him to make a new one, featuring the students of the school. But slowly the power goes to Dean Pelton's head, and he grows more and more obsessed with making the commercial perfect. By the end of the episode, they've gone thousands of dollars over budget and spent weeks filming, editing, changing, and re-filming it. The entire episode is a brilliant pastiche of Hearts Of Darkness, the film that documents the turbulent making of Apocalypse Now.
Best line: "Garrett, you're not taking advantage of the motion capture technology!" "I forgot what I am again!"
7. Curriculum Unavailable (Season 3, Episode 19)
After a turbulent few weeks, Abed Nadir is arrested by the police, and they request he voluntarily visit a psychiatrist. He is hesitant, and so the rest of his study group volunteer to go with him to lend support. For the first half we're treated to an excellent parody of flashback episodes, those dreadful episodes where they decide we should just watch random clips of previous episodes. Instead, Community gives us all new clips and presents them as flashbacks to ridiculous moments of their lives we haven't seen before. This carries on until about halfway through the episode, when it's revealed they have not actually been attending a Community College for the last three years... rather, they've been interred at the Greendale Insane Asylum, and all their adventures have been hallucinations, a shared psychosis. Of course there's more to it than just that, but if you've already seen the episode you know how it turns out, and if you've not seen in before, you don't want the ending spoiled.
Best line: "(singing)
Love is not admissible evidence! (stops singing) I'm writing a cop opera."
