7. Guest Stars
Another traditional sitcom convention is the addition of guest stars and cameos;
Community is no exception to the rule and we've seen the likes of Jack Black, Owen Wilson and Hilary Duff all enjoy hilarious spots on the show. However, it's the way the guest stars are used that is the mark of a good sitcom. Perhaps the best guest star to grace
Community, and there have been a few, is a certain Luis Guzman. From the very beginning, we learn that the school played host to Mr. Guzman many years ago and this recurring gag was brought to a head in Season Three when the man himself turned up. It was great to see Guzman so game and it was just the perfect
Community casting, the most random yet recognisable name possible. Elsewhere, there's the very amusing Anthony Michael Hall (
The Breakfast Club, Edward Scissorhands, The Dark Knight) as Mike, the school hard-ass who has featured in some great scenes and got a cameo in the Paintball episode. We've seen Betty White pop up as an insane Anthropology teacher ("that's why you fail!") and John Goodman in one of his most surreal roles to date...(and there have been a few of them too). The show uses its guest spots sparingly and doesn't throw in a bunch of big name actors to drive ratings, but every now and again it's good fun to see someone thrown into the lion's cage.
