Curb Your Enthusiasm: 10 Moments Where Larry David Was Right

9. "I€™ll Hold Your Popcorn" €“ (S8, Ep 8)

Popcorn1The Context: Larry and his agent Jeff consider investing in an inventor who has developed a €˜car periscope€™, which is exactly what it sounds like. The Issue: A gem of a scene and a superb guest appearance from Aida Turturro, aka Tony Soprano€™s sister Janice. Larry decides to go to the cinema with the inventor and his wife, and duly buys a small popcorn €“ tiny, in fact. As the trio make small talk outside the screen, Larry offers the inventor€™s wife Gabby some of his popcorn. Already wolfing down a pack of red liquorice sticks, she accepts the invitation and takes one hell of a handful out of his box. Now here is where things get tricky. Larry€™s decision to head for a bathroom break prior to the movie prompts Gabby to offer to hold his popcorn. Based on the evidence in front of him (small portion + greedy woman), Larry politely refuses and prefers to take his popcorn into the restroom. For me, this is where Gabby should calmly accept his decision, it€™s HIS food after all. But no, instead she takes major offence, leading to the breakdown in the investment and a cornered attack on Larry in the foyer. Larry may have made a slight reference to her weight in the process, but that was way after the initial dispute. Frankly, it€™s his popcorn, he can do what he wants with it!
