Deadwood: Ranking 15 Cast Members Worst To Best
4. Seth Bullock
Deadwood is an ensemble show but if it had a main character that would be Seth Bullock. As Sheriff of the camp, Bullock often found himself at odds with the criminal enterprises within the town. An honest man with principles, Bullock would clash on several occasions with the ever duplicitous Al Swearengen. Their rivalry turned uneasy alliance is one of the most fascinating dynamics that evolves over the course of the show.
Bullock had close relationships in the camp with his best friend Sol (who narrowly missed a spot on this list), Charlie Utter, and of course Alma Garrett. The latter of which became his lover until his brother's widow and new wife Martha arrived in the camp with his biological nephew William.
Bullock's relationship with his new family was slow moving at first but when William is crushed and killed by a stampeding horse, some of the best dramatic material in the whole show is Bullock reckoning with what he's lost and the fact he can't have anyone to direct his flaring temper at.
Bullock was a strong presence on the show. His constant rage at injustice highlighted a human element within him that made his struggles with the more immoral characters on the show incredibly compelling. His crowning achievement will be taking the unshakably arrogant George Hearst by the ear, not once, but twice.
