2. 'Calamity' Jane Canary

Deadwood HBO
HBO

In a world where you were either a man's wife or a sex worker. Jane refused to be either, defying all expectations that were had of her as a woman. Shattering every convention of the time, Jane was a bombastic and unfiltered presence in the camp who drank excessive amounts and took great joy in being standoffish wherever possible.

After the death of 'Wild' Bill, Jane seeped into alcoholism and became depressed. Her drunken outbursts were often amusing, if a little sad to watch. Jane was caring and defensive of those in need and to watch her being in need herself for a good portion of the show can be difficult.

That's why her relationship with Joanie is incredibly gratifying as we see them pull each other off the ledge they both find themselves on. Jane was a constantly self destructing figure and is a great representation of someone struggling with substance abuse and mental health problems.

Her ferocious support of those she loved made her easy to get behind and she stood as the moral core of the whole show. One of the final moments of Deadwood: The Movie is Jane overcoming her fears and enacting a moment of true bravery. We felt just as proud of her as Joanie did.
