Although the episode was a bit disjointed at times, "This is the Way the World Ends" would have made for a passable season finale if not for the relentless reminders of Deb's affliction for her own foster brother.

Small things like her reaction to Dexter saying "I love you" were uncomfortable in their own right, but the show pushed the envelope further near the end of the episode when Deb told her psychiatrist that she was, indeed, in love with Dex. Given that she was a doctor, it was a bit odd for her to give 'Debbie Downer' the OK to express her emotions to her brother. Nonetheless, that was the plan.

The near-incestual storyline was one that irked fans and didn't need to exist in the first place. Like many other occasions, other creative concepts could have lead viewers to the major turning point. In fact, just about any other idea would have been suitable.

Regardless, by the end of the episode, there was meant to be a big reveal. As a love-stricken Deb entered a church, she managed to catch her brother stabbing a knife through Travis Marshall's chest. The big turn was that she now knew her brother was a killer. Unfortunately, the inciting moment for season seven was overshadowed by a sibling love story fans wished the creators would have let go like many of the subplots.
