For fans of Matt Groening’s other works, the moment King Zog leaps into the air and shouts ‘bite my shiny metal axe!’ is absolutely brilliant. Zog is voiced by John DiMaggio, who also voices Bender in Futurama, and it’s far from the only link to Groening’s other works in Part Two.
This entry is basically all of the Easter Eggs, although ‘bite my shiny metal axe’ is by far the best and most overt.
We also hear Zog shout Bender’s lesser known catchphrase ‘let’s go already!’, but it’s Steamland which is really crammed with them.
Bean goes to Farnsworth Boulevard, and passes by a sign incredibly similar to Planet Express for a company advertising airships. There’s also a scene focusing on the different lengths of wire in a scientist’s (or as Bean would say, stientist’s) drawer, recalling Futurama’s pilot.
The presence of Farnsworth Boulevard might just be a very visible reference, or as some fans believe, might be planting the seed for the universes to become linked. With a similar art style, humour and several shared voice actors, it makes more sense than with The Simpsons, at least.
Regardless of whether it’s all a big conspiracy or just some cute references, Zog’s shiny metal axe was the highlight of the season.
