Doctor Who: 10 Awesome Episodes For Those Weary Of Waiting For 50th Anniversary

7. Smith And Jones

Smith And Jones Another admission to make; I'm African American. The fact that Martha Jones is a woman of colour was awesome for me! And I empathized with her character because she was in love with him too. The introduction of a new Doctor or companion is never easy, but they did a bang up job with Martha. First of all, she was smart. Being a medical student she was more self-assured than Rose. She made me think of past companions in the Whoverse and she compared favorably; in particular Ace, Romana and Zoe. The Doctor saw it right away when after they and the hospital are transported to the moon, Martha's coworker panics over the thought of opening a window; thinking that all the air would be sucked out. But Martha, sharp as a tack, says that the window wasn't airtight, so that would have happened already. Secondly, she had a sense of adventure. I often think that if I met the Doctor, would he pick me to travel with him or would he leave me behind because I would slow him down? Martha gave me hope that I could have measured up to the Doctor's standard. She showed that she was quick on her feet. When the Judoon, (the aliens who have transported them) are searching the hospital looking for an alien, Martha follows the Doctors cues and keeps up with him every step of the way. When Martha and the Doctor figure out that Mrs. Finnegan is the alien they are looking for, they leap into action to figure out how to get the Judoon to see it. The Doctor lets Mrs. Finnegan drink his blood, so when they scan her to see if she's human she shows up as an alien. Martha resuscitates the Doctor because she remembers he has two hearts. She saves him and the hospital is transplanted back to Earth just in the nick of time before they lose all their oxygen. Lastly, she was strong. She cared about her family. She grew as a person. She walked the freakin' Earth for the Doctor. She held her own with him and did so with grace. I know a lot of people hate that she was in love with the Doctor, but I think who wouldn't be? In the end, she saw that he wasn't going to return her feelings and moved on with her life without him rather than stay and hope he would change his mind. Love Martha Jones!

Melita is into all things Doctor Who. She is a mother of two teenagers and has raised them to be proper geeks, just like she is.
