Doctor Who: 10 Best NuWho Villains That Only Appeared Once

3. The Beast

Episode: The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit Some call him Abaddon. Some call Krop Tor. Some call him Lucifer. But whatever people call him he made for one hell of an antagonist, in another of the great two-part episodes. Basically the personification of all evil, this chained demon is said to be the basis for the Devil himself. It's not just the physical form of The Beast that's terrifying €“ although he seems to be lacking a bit in the CGI department €“ but the red-eyed Ood and possessed Toby also keep the terror levels amped up. From the moment we see a possessed Toby standing on the planets surface and not getting sucked into that black hole, the tension never lets up throughout the rest of the story. The Beast's biggest trump card is that he knows the weaknesses of all the crew €“ he attacks Captain Zach's doubt, Mr Jefferson's regret, Toby's fear. He even taunts Rose by telling her of her impending death, and calling out The Doctor as the killer of his own kind. He plays on the basic fears of the crew members, indeed the fears that we all have, and that's what makes him so frightening. The best example of this comes during a fantastic monologue, where he exposes the darkest secrets of each of the crew members, driving them into a panicked frenzy. In The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit, Krop Tor was the first new planet that we visited since the 2005 reboot. We weren't disappointed. What we got was a setting and an antagonist that would have been right at home in a big budget sci-fi movie. And for a first foray beyond the confines of the solar system, the production team gave us a unique planet and story that delivered in every sense of the word.
