Doctor Who: 10 Best Sideways Episodes

6. Rise Of The Cybermen/The Age Of Steel By Tom McRae

After Inferno, the next proper attempt that Doctor Who made at a parallel world was over 35 years later with the Tenth Doctor adventure Rise of the Cybermen/The Age of Steel. Tasked with reinventing one of the show's most famous monsters (after their rather muddled history in the classic series), this story sees the Doctor, Rose and Mickey find themselves in an alternate Earth incredibly similar to their own. Except, Rose's dad is still alive, there's a President of Great Britain (we seem to be the only universe with a Queen) and, oh, yes, the world is being overtaken by Cybermen. Much like Inferno, this two-parter allows us to see our world if things were exacerbated just that bit more to create a rather horrible society. In this case, our obsession with technology and upgrades has led one mad scientist (and, surely, a massive Davros fan) to create the next upgrade of humanity. Interestingly, in 2013's Nightmare in Silver, the Cybermen from our universe were reintroduced into the show, overwriting these parallel Cybermen. Oh, well, the latest upgrades aren't for everyone.
