10. Danny Dies

In terms of revelations, this was one pretty huge and blindsided the audience long before we ever got to Missy and the Cybermen. We've spent nine episode getting to know Danny Pink and watched as his relationship with Clara unfolded. There's been plenty of Moffat's Coupling-style awkwardness, big declarations of love, a glimpse of their descendant Orson and some explosive fireworks between Danny and the Doctor. But in the end, Danny has been Clara's rock to Earth, becoming a believable reason for her to give up her adventures with the Doctor completely. Killing him off in the opening of Dark Water took series eight in startling, tragic turn. But it also served as the doorway in which the Doctor and Clara discovered the secrets of the Promised Land and encountered the mysterious Missy. We've watched as Missy has studied the Doctor - her 'boyfriend' - and even made a bold declaration in choosing Clara well. But up until this week the Doctor and Clara have been oblivious to the bigger picture. Danny's death took them on a journey to the mysterious 3W Institute, the Cybermen tombs and encounter with Missy herself. That's one hell of a way to move the plot forward!
